Current COPD Studies

The current COPD studies are open for enrollment unless otherwise noted. There are multiple COPD studies and each study varies in duration. Compensation is up to $1848 for your time and effort. To see if you are eligible for any of our studies, please contact us at 617-732-8201 or via e-mail at ARC@bwh.harvard.edu or Click HERE to complete our survey and see if you qualify to participate.

AEOLUS

The AEOLUS Study is a Phase 4 randomized clinical trial investigating the effects of the FDA-approved medication Dupixent® (dupilumab) on airway inflammation and mucus plugging on CT scan in individuals with moderate-to-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Participants will receive dupilumab or placebo injections every 2 weeks for 6 months with 9 scheduled in person study visits. In this study, dupilumab is considered investigational. Eligible participants must be current or former smokers, between 40 and 85 years old and currently be using triple-inhaler therapy for COPD or similar.
Over the 40-week study period, participants will complete lung function testing, questionnaires, electronic diary entries and 3 CT scans. Participants will be compensated up to $1848 for their time and will be given parking vouchers for the BWH garages.

If you are interested please fill out the short screening survey located at this link, https://redcap.link/COPDscreener. Please contact us with any questions at 617-732-8201 or by e-mail at ARC@partners.org.

THARROS

The THARROS study is a phase III clinical trial evaluating if inhaled medication containing a corticosteroid can help reduce the risk of COPD flare-ups and serious heart events like heart attack and heart failure in people with COPD. This study will be comparing both FDA approved Breztri – containing budesonide, glycopyrronium, and formoterol fumarate – and an investigational dual therapy of glycopyrronium and formoterol fumarate. The components of these medicines are designed to work together to reduce inflammation (the corticosteroid component), relax the muscles in the airway, and help keep the airways open. We are looking for current or former smokers aged 40-80 with COPD and elevated cardiopulmonary risk who are not currently taking an inhaled steroid.

All participants will start off on the dual therapy at the first in person visit and will take it until their second visit where all eligible participants will be randomly chosen for either the dual therapy or Breztri. They will take this as maintenance for up to 3 years while completing 9 virtual visits with study staff. This study provides maintenance and rescue inhalers for COPD for up to 3 years. Participants will be compensated up to $1300 over 3 years and will be given parking vouchers for the BWH garages.

ElevAATe-OLE (Closed to enrollment)

The ElevAATe-OLE study is evaluating the long-term safety and therapeutic effects of a new Augmentation Therapy for patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.  This new therapy may require less frequent dosing but still raise and maintain AAT levels.  Participants would receive an IV infusion treatment every 3-4 weeks, and all participants will be receiving the active treatment.  Two bronchoscopies would be performed, before the first infusion and after 24 weeks on infusions. The first few infusions will be done at the hospital and then you may choose to have some infusions done at home. This is a Phase II clinical study sponsored by Sanofi.

Participants interested in the study would undergo an assessment to determine if you are eligible, including lung function testing, CT scan and blood draw.  If you are currently on augmentation therapy, you will be required to stop the therapy before you can begin this study. All study-related visits, tests and study treatments will be of no cost to the participant. Compensation is $100 for each in person visit (up to a maximum of $6100) and parking during study visits is covered by vouchers for the BWH garages.
